Yesterday marked the incredible 1000-year annivers Yesterday marked the incredible 1000-year anniversary of the awe-inspiring Mont-Saint Michel, a UNESCO world heritage site, and I couldn't resist sharing some of my photos of the abbey. This timeless wonder has witnessed the ebb and flow of history, leaving an indelible mark on the tapestry of France. From its humble beginnings as a hermitage to a majestic monastery, Mont-Saint Michel has traversed centuries with grace and grandeur. One of the highlights of this storied gem is its transformation into a prison during the French Revolution. King Louis XI had the abbey turned into a sort of Alcatraz, with dissidents confined to its dark halls. After the revolution the site remained a prison for nearly 100 years, until Victor Hugo and others called for it's closing. During World War II, German soldiers occupied Mont-Saint Michel, using it as a lookout post. It also became an intriguing attraction for German tourists and soldiers, with around 325,000 visitors during the occupation. But the tides turned, and on August 1, 1944, Allied troops, accompanied by British reporters and jubilant French locals, entered Mont-Saint Michel, marking a moment of liberation. A single American Private, Freeman Brougher, along with the reporters officially "liberated" the island, when they drove up to the mont after the german withdrawal. Personally, Mont-Saint Michel holds a special place in my heart. Its ethereal beauty has beckoned me on several occasions, and each visit has felt like stepping into a fairytale. Whether you've visited this enchanting island or dream of exploring it one day, let us pause and celebrate its 1000-year legacy.
